| CENTRE OF THE CAPITAL AREA |

The Town Between the Bays
Kópavogur, which is the second largest municipality
in Iceland, is a comparatively young town. It has grown
rapidly, and this growth is steadily continuing as new
land is annually taken under construction. Kópavogur
is located by the capital, and two of the main roads
in the Greater Reykjavík area, the Hafnarfjörður
road and Reykjanes highway, both run through Kópavogur.
The western part of the town lies on the Kársnes
peninsular. North of that is Fossvogur, and then, in
the south, is Kópavogur itself. The eastern part
of the town runs along on the Digranesháls ridge,
and a new area of houses and flats is being constructed
to the south of this. The district of Kópavogur
is divided into three parts, and the main part of the
town in the east now reaches as far as the Elliðavatn
lake.
| ART AND CULTURE IN KOPAVOGUR |
 |
An independent and vibrant cultural life flourishes
in Kópavogur, despite the township's close proximity
to Reykjavík, the nation's cultural centre. Kópavogur
operates three major cultural institutions without state
funding: Gerðarsafn, the Municipal Art Museum, The
Kópavogur Municipal Library and Natural History
Institute. Kópavogur Cultural Centre is now under
construction in the heart of the town. The first section
of the centre will house a music school and a conert
hall.
| OUTDOOR RECREATION |
 |
In Kopavogur there are numerous opportunities for outdoor
recreation: walking, horse riding, swimming, skiing,
sailing, jogging, tennis, ball sports and golf. |
